A pool gets used most in the summer. A spa gets used year-round. That difference alone is why so many of the custom pools we build include a spa, either attached directly to the pool or as a standalone feature nearby. Done right, a spa adds both function and a strong visual centerpiece to a backyard.
Attached vs. Standalone Spas
An attached spa shares a wall with the pool and typically includes a spillway, where heated water flows from the spa into the pool, creating both a visual feature and a way to keep water moving. This is the most common configuration we build, because it uses space efficiently and the spillway becomes a focal point on its own.
A standalone spa, set apart from the pool, gives more flexibility in placement and can be positioned to take advantage of a specific view or a more private corner of the yard. It also means the spa can be heated and used independently without affecting the pool's temperature, which matters for homeowners who want to use the spa in cooler months without heating the entire pool.
Sizing and Seating
Spa size depends on how it will be used. A smaller spa designed for two people sitting across from each other heats up faster and costs less to run, while a larger spa with bench seating around the perimeter can comfortably fit a group. We talk through how the spa will actually be used, quiet evenings for two, or entertaining a group, before settling on dimensions, because that answer changes the design.
Jets, Heating, and Water Features
Modern spa jets can be positioned for different purposes: some aimed at the back and shoulders for relaxation, others positioned lower for legs and feet. A dedicated spa heater, paired with automation, lets the spa reach a comfortable soaking temperature quickly without waiting on the larger pool to heat up.
A sheer descent waterfall or a raised spillway wall between the spa and pool adds both sound and movement, two things that make a backyard feel more like a retreat. At night, with the right lighting, that same water feature becomes the visual centerpiece of the whole space.
Designing for Every Season
One of the biggest advantages of adding a spa is that it extends how much of the year your pool area gets used. On a cool evening when the pool itself is too cold to swim in, a heated spa with steam rising off the surface turns into one of the most-used spots in the backyard. For homeowners in the Katy and Houston area, where winters are mild but pools still cool down, that extra usage adds real value to the investment.
