Best Patio Materials for Heat in Texas

Anyone who has walked barefoot across a dark concrete patio at two in the afternoon in July knows that not all patio surfaces are created equal when it comes to heat. If you are planning a covered patio, a pool deck, or an outdoor living space, the material you choose affects how comfortable that space actually is during the months you will use it most.

Travertine: A Texas Favorite for a Reason

Travertine is one of the most popular choices for pool decks and patios in our area, and heat resistance is a big part of why. The natural stone stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete or many pavers, even in direct sun. It also has a naturally textured, slightly porous surface that provides good traction around a pool, which matters when feet are wet.

Travertine does come at a higher price point than poured concrete, but for pool decks and patios where bare feet are a given, the comfort difference is real and noticeable.

Pavers: Durable and Versatile

Concrete and clay pavers are a strong middle-ground option. Lighter colored pavers reflect more heat than darker ones, so color choice matters as much as material choice here. Pavers also have small gaps between each unit that allow for some heat dissipation and excellent drainage, and if one paver gets damaged or stained, it can be replaced individually without redoing the whole patio.

For homeowners who want a custom look with borders, patterns, or a mix of colors, pavers offer a lot of design flexibility while still holding up well to Texas summers.

Cool Deck and Stamped Concrete

A Cool Deck or similar textured acrylic coating over concrete is one of the most affordable ways to manage heat on a pool deck. These coatings come in lighter colors that reflect more sunlight than bare concrete, and the textured finish reduces the surface temperature compared to a smooth slab. They also give a clean, finished look at a lower cost than stone or pavers.

Stamped concrete can mimic the look of stone or tile at a lower price point, but plain gray stamped concrete without a cool coating can still get quite hot. If you go this route, a lighter color and a heat-reflective sealer make a noticeable difference.

What We Recommend

For most pool decks and patios in the Katy and Houston area, we lean toward travertine or light-colored pavers when the budget allows, because the difference in comfort during peak summer is significant. For homeowners working with a tighter budget, a Cool Deck coating in a light color over concrete is a smart way to get a comfortable surface without the cost of natural stone.

The right answer often comes down to how the space will be used, how much direct sun it gets, and what the overall budget looks like for the project. We walk through these tradeoffs with every homeowner during the design phase, so the final choice fits both the look and the way the space will actually be used.
