When pool tile looks dull, dingy, or covered in buildup, the first instinct for a lot of homeowners is to assume it needs to be replaced. Retiling is a real option, but it is also one of the more expensive and time-consuming parts of a pool renovation. Before assuming that is the answer, it is worth understanding when sandblasting can get the same visual result for a fraction of the cost.
When Sandblasting Is the Right Call
If the tile itself is intact, no cracks, no missing pieces, grout lines still solid, but it looks dull, gray, or chalky, that is almost always a buildup issue rather than a tile failure issue. Sandblasting removes the buildup and reveals the original tile underneath, which in most cases looks close to new once the scale is gone. This is the more common situation, especially for pools between five and fifteen years old.
When Retiling Makes More Sense
Retiling becomes the right answer when the tile itself has failed: cracked or chipped tiles, tiles that have come loose from the substrate, or grout that has deteriorated to the point where water is getting behind the tile. In these cases, no amount of cleaning or sandblasting fixes the underlying problem, since the issue is with the tile and its attachment, not just the surface.
Retiling is also the right choice if you want to change the look of your pool entirely, a different color, pattern, or material than what is currently installed. Sandblasting restores what is there, it does not change it.
Cost and Time Differences
Sandblasting is significantly less expensive than retiling, and it takes a fraction of the time, often completed in a day or two depending on the scope, compared to a retiling project that involves removing old tile, prepping the substrate, and installing and grouting new tile.
How to Tell Which One You Need
The best way to know for sure is to have someone take a look in person. From a distance, heavy buildup and tile damage can sometimes look similar, dull and discolored, but up close the difference between "this just needs cleaning" and "this tile is failing" is usually clear.
Our Approach
When we get called out for tile that looks like it needs work, we assess it honestly. If sandblasting will get the job done, that is what we recommend, because it is faster and less expensive for you. We only recommend retiling when it is actually necessary, or when a homeowner wants to change the look of their pool as part of a larger renovation.
